{"id":21373,"date":"2020-11-23T07:40:48","date_gmt":"2020-11-23T13:40:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nogginbuilders.com\/?p=21373"},"modified":"2020-11-23T07:47:51","modified_gmt":"2020-11-23T13:47:51","slug":"21373","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nogginbuilders.com\/NBwp\/2020\/11\/21373\/","title":{"rendered":"Find a New Angle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.21.1&#8243;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;3.21.1&#8243;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.21.1&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.21.1&#8243;]What&#8217;s not to love about a giant inflatable healthcare robot that knows how to fist bump?&nbsp; There are so many reasons I relate to the movie Big Hero 6, particularly my love of &#8220;cool tech&#8221; and majoring in robotics engineering in grad school.&nbsp; Here are three reasons why I think you should watch Big Hero 6 with your kids.<\/p>\n<p><b>Cool Tech<\/b> &#8211; While this movie is set in fictional San Fransokyo and much of the technology is futuristic, the concepts are based in real science, and some of the tech isn&#8217;t too far away from reality.&nbsp; Some of the robotic features of Baymax were already being explored and prototyped by robotics&nbsp;engineers at the time the&nbsp;film was created.&nbsp; Magnetic levitation (or &#8220;maglev&#8221;) technology is already a reality in high speed trains &#8211; GoGo&#8217;s bike wheels may be in our future.&nbsp; Plasma cutting technology, similar to Wasabi&#8217;s, has been around for decades, and while it&#8217;s mainly used in factories for automation, there are also applications like surgery scalpels.&nbsp; Honey Lemon&#8217;s purse is a bit far fetched, but her science is real chemistry.<\/p>\n<p><b>Embracing a Love of STEM<\/b> &#8211; This is a superhero story, inspired by a Marvel comic.&nbsp; But these are not your everyday superheroes.&nbsp; \u201cTheir superpowers are their intelligence, and that\u2019s a great message,\u201d producer Roy Conli told&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/8-real-life-robots-that-inspired-big-hero-6-1643663925\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/8-real-life-robots-that-inspired-big-hero-6-1643663925&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1606224930026000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1RNWKh2c135t7cDm1DYxOc\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gizmodo<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s really a celebration of the nerd.\u201d&nbsp; Early in the movie, young Hiro scorns his older brother&#8217;s &#8220;nerd school&#8221;, but once he sets foot inside the lab, it&#8217;s love at first sight and he realizes that&#8217;s where he wants to be.&nbsp; Does your child love to design and build, hypothesise and prototype?&nbsp; If you inspire that passion, you may encourage your child to follow a path in STEM.&nbsp; &nbsp; Help your child find role models who share a passion for learning, exploring and tinkering.<\/p>\n<p><b>&#8220;Look for a New Angle&#8221;<\/b> &#8211; My favorite theme of the movie is creative problem solving.&nbsp; When Hiro gets stuck trying to dream up a&nbsp;new robotic project, his brother encourages him to &#8220;look for a new angle&#8221; (while holding him upside down!).&nbsp; Even though you may not want to take the phrase so literally, it reminds us to encourage&nbsp;our child to use problem solving to work through a challenging situation.&nbsp; Each time he faces a challenge, your child has an opportunity to grow!&nbsp; By practicing creative problem solving your child will become more resilient and enhance their flexible thinking.&nbsp; So next time your child is struggling, encourage them to &#8220;look for a new angle&#8221;.[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/nogginbuilders.com\/NBwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/image.png&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.21.1&#8243;][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Looking for a STEM movie to watch with your kids over the holidays?
