Creativity: It isn\u2019t just for art class (Part 1)<\/b><\/p>\n

How many times have you admired a stunning centerpiece or a<\/span> Pinterest-worthy birthday cake<\/span><\/a> and thought, \u201cOh, that person\u2019s so creative\u201d? And maybe two seconds later, \u201cToo bad <\/span>I\u2019m<\/span><\/i> not that creative.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Well, think again.<\/span><\/p>\n

While the crafty folks who made those items might indeed have their own creative flair, it\u2019s also worth considering that our definition of creativity is <\/span>much too narrow<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Creativity redefined<\/b><\/p>\n

Because it\u2019s not just about picking up a paintbrush\u2014or even composing a song or designing a building. Creative thinking is about looking at situations in a new way. Using a fresh perspective to meet a challenge. Or, as writer<\/span> Hugh Howey<\/span><\/a> says, \u201cSeeing something that doesn\u2019t exist and then making it so.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

We <\/span>all<\/span><\/i> have that ability. And we need to use it. The idea that creativity is the realm of a select few right-brainers has pretty much been<\/span> debunked<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

If your children have ever taken a<\/span> Noggin Builders class<\/span><\/a>, you know how important creativity is in our activities. Kids aren\u2019t just putting pieces together to build a rocket. They need to contemplate what design might make the rocket shoot faster, straighter, farther. If the first approach doesn\u2019t work, they strive to come up with alternate solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Creative solutions are all around us<\/b><\/p>\n

Computers may be performing more and more rote tasks for us, but they lack the secret \u201cC\u201d sauce.<\/span><\/p>\n

Creativity is what\u2019s solving some of society\u2019s toughest problems, which is why it\u2019s one of the top three critical skills in the job market of today and tomorrow, according to a recent World Economic Forum<\/span> Future of Jobs<\/span><\/i> report<\/span><\/a>. (Numbers one and two are complex problem-solving and critical thinking.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Just a few real-world examples of creative problem-solving turned loose:<\/span><\/p>\n
