At Noggin Builders, we love projects and experiments that allow for open exploration. So what better way to wrap up our Winter Break Science at Home blogs than with an awesome building and engineering activity!<\/p>\n

Things can float, things can sink, and things can\u2026 flink!<\/p>\n

A true flinker manages to float and sink at the same time, falling below the surface of the water, but doesn\u2019t sink all the way to the bottom.<\/p>\n

Using recyclable items found around the house, can you build a boat that flinks?<\/p>\n

Suggested supplies to find:
\n-cardboard
\n-tin foil
\n-straws
\n-styrofoam
\n-plastic wrap
\n-popsicle sticks
\n-plastic cups
\n-plastic bottles
\n-marbles
\n-coins
\n-a sink or bathtub filled with water!<\/p>\n

Building a flinker can be tricker than it seems. Lots of items will naturally float, just as many items will automatically sink. Discovering the right balance of buoyancy and weight to build a true flinker is a great problem solving and exploratory project!<\/p>\n
