Create an art project while also exploring absorption!
You will need:
-thick paper (such as card stock)
-squeeze bottle of glue
-salt
-messy tray to catch salt
-food coloring or liquid watercolor paint
-pipette or dropper
For this project, children will be drawing with a squeeze bottle of glue. When drawing their picture, their lines of glue should be thick and raised from the paper.
Once the drawing is finished, place the paper into a messy tray and sprinkle with salt. Fully cover all of the exposed glue with salt, shaking off excess as needed.
Using the pipettes, carefully drop the coloring onto the salted glue.
Watch as the salt absorbs the color, spreading it through the drawing! The color will quickly be absorbed through the salt. Salt absorbs water because salt has strong forces that attract water, which is highly polar. This is called hygroscopic!
